Book Review: Yours Truly

when Yours Truly came out, I knew I had to buy it. I discovered Abby Jimenez when I read Part of Your World and immediately became obsessed. Let me just say that Jimenez has quickly become one of my favorite writers, and she is now an auto-buy author for me. Here’s what I thought about her newest book.

Synopsis

Briana, an ER doctor, is trying to make it through a rough patch in her life when a new doctor joins their staff. Jacob, who struggles with anxiety, does not make a great first impression despite his best efforts. He decides to write Briana a letter since he has trouble saying what he means face-to-face. As the two grow closer, Jacob learns that Briana’s brother needs a kidney transplant. Jacob decides to donate his kidney anonymously to pay forward an act of kindness from his childhood. Briana finds out that Jacob is the donor, so when he asks her to pretend to be his girlfriend until his brother’s wedding, she can hardly say no. The two grow closer and have to decide what is real, and what is all part of the act.

Details/Review

  • I devoured this book. I read this while I was sick, and it was the perfect distraction. I read it within the span of 2 days (which is rare for me). Jacob, the MMC, was a serious gem, and I teared up at the end of the novel. To say that I enjoyed it is an understatement.
  • This does feature some of your typical romance tropes such as miscommunication, fake dating, and a single bed.
  • The book has some spice, but not very much.
  • The story has dual POVs alternating between Briana and Jacob. I thought this was really helpful in understanding Jacob’s anxiety and how it impacts him.
  • As with her other works, Jimenez manages to write a story that is romantic and funny while also highlighting serious topics such as mental health, divorce, and chronic illness.
  • While this is technically book 2 in the Part of Your World series, this could be read as a stand-alone (but if you haven’t read Part of Your World, what are you doing? RUN and get it!!).
  • I didn’t see the end of the book coming — while it does feature a 3rd act rough patch, it was a bit surprising, but ultimately I think it worked. You could also see how Jimenez was building towards this throughout the whole book with Brianna’s character development.
  • If the miscommunication trope bothers you, then I would skip this one as it does rely on it quite heavily.
