Book Review: West With Giraffes

West With Giraffes piqued my interest because I love a good story that involves animals. While I did love the giraffes in this story, it fell a little short for me emotionally. Read on for a synopsis and my full thoughts.

Synopsis

When two giraffes arrive in New York on their way to San Diego, Woodrow Wilson Nickel decides he is going to follow them. He doesn’t know exactly how he will accomplish this, but there is an undeniable pull that propels him on the quest. Soon, he finds himself driving the truck that is transporting the giraffes. Woodrow and company must get the giraffes to California as quickly as possible to ensure the giraffe’s health, but the trip there is filled with obstacles and surprises.

Details/Review

  • This follows the quest trope where the character sets off on a mission but learns things about himself along the way.
  • It alternates between the past and the present day as Woodrow tells his story. I didn’t think the present-day narrative added that much to the story.
  • I enjoyed this but did not feel a particularly strong emotional connection to the characters, hence my average rating.
  • Read if you like cross-country road trip stories, stories that feature animals, or Dust-Bowl era settings.
  • If you enjoyed this one, or the concept of this one is interesting to you, check out Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen.
