Book Review: Happy Place

Happy Place by Emily Henry might just be the book of the summer! I have read every Henry book to date, and so I was thrilled for this release. Even more thrilling was the fact that I found my copy at my local Costco. Win-win! Read on for my synopsis and thoughts:

Synopsis

Sabrina, Harriet, and Cleo have taken yearly trips to Sabrina’s family home in Maine since college. When Harriet arrives for this year’s trip, she is shocked by two facts: 1. this will be their last trip because Sabrina’s family is selling the cottage; and 2. Harriet’s ex-fiancé Wyn is there. Even though Harriet and Wyn broke up 5 months ago, they never told their friends. And so, the two must pretend to still be together for the sake of the group and their final vacation at the cottage.

Details/Review:

  • I am usually not one who enjoys a second chance romance, but this book proved me wrong!
  • The conflict between Wyn and Harriet was incredibly realistic. One flaw of the romance genre is that the tension often feels forced. However, in Happy Place that is far from the case. Henry demonstrates how two people who love each other deeply can grow apart due to life circumstances.
  • Part of what makes this book so great is Harriet’s character development. So often we put ourselves on a specific track and think we need to follow it forever. Through Harriet, we can see that sometimes what we set out to do is not always the right choice for us, and we shouldn’t be afraid to reevaluate. This resonated deeply with me as someone who thought they would be a teacher forever and left the classroom after 12 years.
  • I loved the cast of characters Henry created: they all had such depth, and I felt like they were my friends too.
  • This book made me so nostalgic for that time in your life when your friends are your family.
  • This might just be my favorite Emily Henry book yet! RUN and grab yourself a copy–this book is that good!
